Keir Starmer says the United Kingdom will recognize Palestinian statehood in September if Israel does not accept a ceasefire and a two-state solution.

"Downing Street" has published the statement of today's cabinet meeting on Gaza.

Referring to recognition, Starmer said that this government's early position was that the recognition of a Palestinian state was an inalienable right of the Palestinian people and that they would recognize a Palestinian state as part of a peace process and a two-state solution.

He said that due to the increasingly intolerable situation in Gaza and the diminishing prospect of a peace process towards a two-state solution, now is the right time to move this stance forward. He said the UK will recognise the state of Palestine in September, ahead of the UN General Assembly, unless the Israeli government takes substantial steps to end the terrible situation in Gaza, reaches a ceasefire, makes it clear there will be no annexation in the West Bank and commits to a long-term peace process that offers a two-state solution.

Starmer reiterated that there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas and that demands on Hamas remain, that they release all hostages, sign a ceasefire, accept that they will play no role in the government of Gaza and disarm.
