The border crisis between Thailand and Cambodia appears to be continuing despite a ceasefire agreement reached just a day earlier. Thai authorities have officially accused Cambodia of deliberately violating the ceasefire agreement, reporting new fighting along the border between the two countries.

The ceasefire agreed on Monday aimed to end a five-day conflict, which has so far left at least 33 dead and forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai called for calm and hailed the agreement as a step towards a peaceful resolution of tensions. “The ceasefire reflects Thailand’s desire for a peaceful resolution. We are committed to implementing it in good faith by both sides,” he said.

However, the Thai military reported that Cambodian forces had launched overnight attacks at several points along the border, violating the agreement. According to the military statement, Thai troops did not respond militarily, respecting the ceasefire, but were fired upon by the other side until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense has denied the allegations, telling the AFP agency that there have been no armed clashes since the ceasefire came into effect.

According to the signed agreement, both sides committed to withdrawing troops from tense areas and allowing independent monitoring to avoid further escalation of the conflict.

The situation on the border remains tense, while the international community is watching developments with concern and calling for respect for the agreement and the restoration of stability.
