A gunman has killed four people, including a police officer, during a shooting rampage in a New York skyscraper.

The perpetrator died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest after killing the officer and three civilians, officials said, Sky News reports.

The suspect was identified as a 27-year-old Las Vegas man named Shane Devon Tamura, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference.

She added that Tamura had a "documented history of mental health," but his motive was unknown.

In addition to those killed, one man was seriously injured and remains in critical condition.

The police officer who was killed has been identified as Didarul Islam.
