The war between the United States and Iran has caused a deep rift between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, according to Axios reporting.

Sources from the US and the region say that President Donald Trump's administration initially failed to properly assess the seriousness of the rift and ultimately chose not to intervene.

In the early stages of the conflict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi that Washington would not take sides in this conflict.

Senior officials, who spoke to Axios on condition of anonymity, warn that the two key US allies in the region could become even more hostile towards each other after the war ends.
