Spain, due to its close ties with Latin America and proximity to Morocco, one of the main producers of cannabis, is considered one of the main entry points for drugs into Europe.

Spanish police have seized a record amount of cocaine from a ship in the Atlantic Ocean, which Euronews reports could be up to 40 tonnes. The ship was stopped by the Guardia Civil in international waters near the Canary Islands on Friday, May 1, and around 20 people have been arrested.

According to preliminary estimates, the ship's hold was "completely filled" with drug packages, making this one of the largest seizures in history.

The ship is currently being inspected in the Canary Islands. It had set off from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, to Benghazi in Libya. However, according to experts, this route does not make much sense for unloading such a large amount of drugs in Libya.

Patterns from previous operations indicate that the cargo was expected to be transferred to smaller vessels for distribution in Europe. Such an offloading at a single port would immediately raise suspicions, and it is believed that the operation was coordinated by international drug trafficking networks.

Spain's Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, declared in Madrid that this was "one of the largest seizures, not only at a national level, but also internationally," without providing further details.

The investigation remains under investigative secrecy by court order, while the Civil Guard has not officially confirmed all the details of the operation.

The operation follows several other major crackdowns in Spain. In 2024, police seized 13 tons of cocaine in the port of Algeciras from a ship coming from Ecuador, while in January around 10 tons of cocaine were seized at sea, one of the largest operations of its kind.
