Ed Miliband will be the UK's Foreign Secretary in Andy Burnham's cabinet, taking the lead in British diplomacy at a time of great geopolitical challenges.
Miliband has a long career in politics dating back to his early years, when he was just 28 years old, when he served as an advisor to Gordon Brown during his time as Treasury Secretary (1997–2002), before being elected MP for Doncaster North in 2005.
He served as a Cabinet Minister (2007–2008) and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (2008–2010). He was elected Leader of the Labour Party from 2010 to 2015, and also led the Energy portfolio (2024–2026).
Miliband is no stranger to public opinion in Kosovo. When David Cameron's Conservative government backed NATO's intervention in Libya in 2011, he — as Labour leader of the opposition — supported military action in principle, citing the example of the humanitarian intervention in Kosovo in 1999.
"Even then, people were raising the same arguments [against intervention in Kosovo], and the truth is that we didn't know where [the military engagement] would end, but by acting in Kosovo, we saved the lives of tens of thousands of people," he said.
