The UK's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham , has announced a new measure to cut public transport costs, setting a £2 cap on bus tickets from next January.
According to the British government, this measure will reduce the price of bus travel by up to a third, as part of efforts to ease the impact of the cost of living crisis on citizens.
The ticket price cap will be supported by an additional £454 million, secured through a review of spending priorities in the Department for Energy Security and Zero Emissions budget, according to the British Prime Minister's Office.
"As I've said from day one, I will build a country that works for everyone, everywhere. That means more connected communities, greater access to opportunity, and less financial burden on people's lives," Burnham declared.
The decision on public transport comes a day after the new British government also announced the removal of VAT from household electricity bills, a measure that will come into effect on October 1.
The cost of this initiative will be covered through the cancellation of the digital identity scheme, a project worth 1.8 billion pounds.
Burnham said his government will introduce other measures in the coming days, with the aim of taking steps that citizens will feel quickly, especially lower-income families.
