Romania's far-right candidate, George Simion, has led in the first round of Sunday's presidential election according to polls, in a repeat of last year's canceled vote that plunged the European Union member state into political turmoil.

Simion, the head of the nationalist AUR party, received between 30 and 33 percent of the vote, ahead of two pro-European candidates who received between 21 and 23 percent, according to two polls.

Romania has been in political chaos since the Supreme Court annulled the first attempt to hold elections at the end of last year. Subsequently, far-right Putinist Calin Georgescu defied the polls by winning the first round, but it was later revealed that he had benefited from a Russian meddling campaign.

Simion voted on Sunday morning together with Georgescu. "The time has come to take back our country from the villain," declared Georgescu, whom Simion has said he would appoint prime minister if he won.
