'We are in World War III', Pope: Stop the war in Ukraine

"If we want it to be Christmas, the Christmas of Jesus and of peace, let us look at Bethlehem and fix our gaze on the face of the Child who was born for us.

And in that small innocent face we see that of children who want peace in every part of the world".

This was Pope Francis' message today to thousands of believers in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica, the traditional message before the "Urbi et Orbi" (City and World) blessing.

The Pope remembered the pains of the world and as always, since the Russian invasion of February 24, his first thought goes to Ukraine.

"Let our gaze be filled with the faces of Ukrainian brothers and sisters who are living this Christmas in the dark, in the cold or far from their homes, because of the destruction caused by ten months of war. May God prepare us for concrete gestures of solidarity to help those who are suffering and enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence the guns and put an immediate end to this senseless war! Unfortunately, we prefer to listen to other reasons, dictated by the logic of the world," he said.

But the list of conflicts and suffering, like every year, is very long. For the first time since the violent suppression of popular protests, Francis publicly mentions Iran and calls on it to "stop all bloodshed."

"Our time is experiencing a serious lack of peace in other regions, in other theaters of this third world war," says Frančesku.

"We regret to note that, while the Prince of Peace is being given to us, the winds of war continue to blow icy cold upon mankind.

If Christ is also the way of peace, the burdens that prevent people from going to Bethlehem and exclude them from the grace of Christmas are the same negative passions that prevented King Herod and his court from recognizing and welcoming the birth of Jesus: relation to power and money, pride, hypocrisy, lies", continued the head of the Catholic Church.
The "third world war" evoked by the Pope is made up of different fragments.

"Let's think about Syria, still plagued by a conflict that has faded into the background but is not over. And let us think of the Holy Land, where violence and clashes have increased in recent months, with deaths and injuries.

We ask God that there, in the land that saw his birth, dialogue and the search for mutual trust between Israelis and Palestinians will resume," Pope Francis said.
