Violent clashes between the Kurdish community and the Paris police have continued for the second day in a row, after the killing of 3 people the day before in a Kurdish cultural center by an armed elderly man.

Hundreds of people again gathered in the center of the French capital and set fire to rubbish bins and destroyed dozens of cars before clashing with police forces.

The incident took place in Republic Square, an area already known for demonstrations, where the Kurds had earlier held a peaceful demonstration.

The violence started immediately when the participants in the protest left the square and clashed with the police, who responded with tear gas.

The protests erupted a day earlier when a gunman entered a Kurdish cultural center in the 10th district and opened fire on those present. As a result, 3 people lost their lives while 2 others were injured, in an attack that is still unclear to the authorities, who immediately arrested the perpetrator.

Police have arrested a 69-year-old man who was recently released from custody while awaiting trial for an attack on a migrant camp in Paris a year ago.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said Friday that possible racist motives would be part of the investigation, but Kurdish representatives said the case should be treated as a terrorist attack.

"We know that we are under threat, Kurds in general, Kurdish activists and militants. France owes us protection", said Berivan Firat, spokesperson of CDK-F, for BFM TV.

The killings occurred at a time when the Kurdish community was preparing for the tenth anniversary of the killing of three Kurdish women in Paris.

"The Kurdish community is afraid. He was already traumatized by the triple murder (2013). He needs answers, support and consideration,” CDK lawyer David Andic told reporters on Friday.
