Japanese officials have approved controversial plans to build the country's first gambling resort. The complex will open in the western city of Osaka in 2029.
Casinos have long been illegal in Japan. But a law was passed in 2018 that exempted games, such as poker, to create jobs and boost tourism.
"We hope that the casino will become a tourist base that promotes the beauty of Japan to the world," according to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Public opinion is divided, with some concerned about the rise of addiction to crime and gambling. In addition to the casino, the complex will include a hotel, conference center, shopping center and museum. The project has an initial investment of 13.5 billion dollars.
