Iranian state media claims that dozens of schoolgirls have been killed after an attack on a girls' school in the south of the country, during the latest offensive that Tehran says was carried out by the US and Israel.

According to the Iranian Mehr news agency, at least 57 schoolgirls were killed and dozens more were trapped under rubble after the attack in the city of Minab, in Hormozgan province. Earlier, the governor of Minab district had said that 24 schoolgirls had been killed.

The reports have not been independently verified by CNN, which said it had sought comment from the US and Israeli militaries, while the Pentagon said it had nothing to add at this time.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmael Baqaie called the attack a "flagrant and unjustified act of aggression," claiming that "dozens of innocent young girls" were killed or injured at the school that was hit.

Another Iranian agency published images purporting to show extensive damage to the building, with smoke rising from the building and cranes removing debris.

Saturday marks the first day of the school week in Iran. Meanwhile, according to Iranian media, two high school students were also killed in a separate rocket attack in Tehran. The situation remains tense, with information from the ground limited and unverified independently.
