An unusual event from Japan has returned to the media spotlight after a significant development in an old criminal case.

Takaba Namiko, 32, was murdered on November 13, 1999, in her apartment in Nagoya, with her two-year-old son found unharmed next to her body. The case remained unsolved for more than two decades.

Her husband, Takaba Satoru, decided to continue paying rent on the apartment where the crime occurred, in order to preserve the scene for possible future analysis.

According to Japanese media, he spent around 22 million yen over 20 years, while simultaneously distributing leaflets and giving interviews to keep public attention alive.

In October 2023, police arrested a woman after new DNA tests and re-evaluation of evidence stored over the years.

According to investigations, she was a former school friend of the man and is suspected of having acted out of jealousy.

"I made sure my son wouldn't ask me one day why I didn't do everything to find his mother's killer," Takaba Satoru said.

During the interview with Japanese media, he happily showed off photos of his son, who had recently married the daughter of one of his late wife's closest friends. "I can imagine how happy she would be!" Takaba says, thinking of his late wife.
