Scorching heat hits Europe

It's so hot in Athens that this young man who serves as the traditional guard of the parliament building is being constantly served by his colleagues to keep him cool.

This Tuesday, maximum temperatures in Greece reached 41 degrees Celsius, while the peak of this wave is expected on Thursday and Friday with 2 degrees more.

Authorities have taken measures, temporarily closing some public spaces such as the Acropolis. Work in outdoor areas will be prohibited from noon to 5:00 p.m.

And while the fire situation in Greece appears calmer than in recent years during this period, scorching heat is fueling fires in several countries in the Mediterranean and Europe. This tornado of flames spread to areas near Bilecik, a city in northern Turkey, and is one of hundreds of fires that have erupted in Turkey this summer. Two deaths have been recorded from fires in Izmir this month alone.

Fires have also been recorded in Bulgaria and further afield in southern European countries such as Italy and Spain.
