Left-wing Labour Party MPs are expected to soon ask Ed Miliband to run for the party leadership, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing pressure after poor results in local elections.

The situation became even more tense after former minister Catherine West declared that, if no cabinet minister comes out openly to challenge Starmer by Monday, she herself will initiate proceedings for the leadership contest.

A number of Labour Party MPs have called for Starmer to set a deadline for leaving the government, although he has insisted he will not resign.

"I will not leave, because that would plunge the country into chaos," Starmer declared.

Within the party, many MPs support the idea of ??Andy Burnham replacing Starmer, but his return to parliament is considered complicated and slow.

Meanwhile, Wes Streeting's name has been floated as another possible candidate, although his allies have categorically denied any plans to challenge the prime minister.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding Burnham and the lack of full support for Angela Rayner, left-wing MPs are looking to Miliband as a figure who could avoid Streeting's dominance in the race.

The Labour Party suffered heavy losses in local elections, losing over 1,400 councillors in England and losing ground to Reform and the Green Party. In Wales, the party lost power for the first time, while it also suffered a decline in the Scottish Parliament.

Catherine West said she would prefer the cabinet to organise an internal restructuring and for Starmer to take on "another role, perhaps international".

However, she admitted that there is currently no clear candidate to unite the party.

In an attempt to regain positions, Starmer appointed former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as envoy for global finance, while Harriet Harman will serve as an adviser on women's and girls' issues.

Meanwhile, critical voices within the Labour Party are growing, with MPs such as Debbie Abrahams and Clive Betts publicly calling for a swift leadership transition.
