US President Donald Trump has said he "may" move US troops from Germany to Poland, as the Pentagon prepares to withdraw around 5,000 US soldiers from Germany over the next year.

"Poland would love to do that," Trump told reporters Friday when asked about the possibility. "We have a great relationship with Poland. I have a very good relationship with the president... I like him a lot, so it's possible," he said.

The Pentagon confirmed earlier this month that the US will withdraw 5,000 troops from military bases in Germany, fulfilling a threat Trump had made after clashing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran war.

Trump later warned that the Pentagon would "cut far more than 5,000" troops.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said on Wednesday that Poland is ready to host US troops who may withdraw from Germany and that he will personally lobby Donald Trump to send soldiers east.

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on Monday that Warsaw should not "hijack" troops from allies.

Polish Defense Minister and leader of the conservative Polish People's Party, W?adys?aw Kosiniak-Kamysz, welcomed Trump's statements on Saturday.

“The Polish-American alliance is the foundation of our security,” he wrote on the social network X. “Poland is ready to accept more American soldiers to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and guarantee even better protection for Europe.”
