American authorities have said that the five people who were on board the Titan submarine died as a result of an explosion while descending to the wreckage of the Titanic 3 kilometers below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. Some remains of the submarine were found near the site of the sinking of the Titanic.
The remains were found at the bottom of the ocean, 480 meters from the Titanic. The wreckage shows a catastrophic decompression that led to the submarine's breakup, the Coast Guard said. According to an expert, the submarine may have exploded under the immense pressure of sea water while it was at the bottom."
The submarine was reported missing on Sunday after initially losing contact with its surface vessel. Her 96-hour oxygen supply reportedly ran out on Thursday.
It is not known whether the explosion occurred on Sunday or in the following days, during the international search for the missing submarine.
Mauger explained that a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) found the wreckage of the Titan about 500 meters from the Titanic. Other ruins have been identified in the area and all have been analyzed by experts. During the press conference from Boston, Mauger explained that the ROV vehicles will remain on the scene to try to get more information with the goal of understanding the causes of this tragic event.
