As the war in Ukraine looks set to drag on, NATO has decided to move some of its reconnaissance aircraft to Romania.
The planes are currently based in Germany, but will be moved closer to Ukraine in order to monitor Russian military activity.
Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) reconnaissance aircraft are expected to arrive in Bucharest on Tuesday, January 17, NATO announced.
NATO will deploy AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) surveillance aircraft to Bucharest, Romania. The aircraft, which is expected to arrive on January 17, 2023, will support the Alliance's expanded presence in the region and will be tasked with monitoring Russian military activity.
NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the alliance's latest decision shows there is no doubt about NATO's determination to protect every inch of its allies.
"As Russia's illegal war in Ukraine continues to threaten peace and security in Europe, there should be no doubt about NATO's determination to defend every inch of Allies' territory," Lungescu.
