Two powerful earthquakes have struck Venezuela's capital, Caracas, within seconds of each other.

The second tremor, with a magnitude of 7.5, is considered one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the South American country in more than a century.

As a result of the earthquakes, several buildings have collapsed in different areas of the city, while residents have rushed to the streets to take shelter in safer places. Journalists on the ground have recorded the moments of strong tremors that caused panic among citizens.

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a state of emergency in the country to deal with the emergency situation.

According to its latest statement, at least 32 people have lost their lives, while around 700 others have been injured. These are the first official figures published by the authorities regarding the balance of victims and injured, while the number is expected to increase significantly.

Rescue and emergency teams continue operations in the affected areas, while authorities are assessing the material damage and the risk of aftershocks. The situation remains evolving and the number of victims and injured is expected to change in the coming hours.
