The Republican-controlled Senate dealt a blow to US President Donald Trump after passing a measure requiring him to halt the war in Iran or seek congressional approval before any military action.
But the resolution is largely symbolic and, despite getting the green light in both houses of Congress, will not be sent to Trump for signature and does not carry the force of law. Three Republicans joined Democrats in Tuesday's vote, passing the resolution by a vote of 50 to 48.
The move comes as Republicans in Congress have expressed skepticism about Trump's Iran peace plan. The US president has sharply criticized the resolution, calling it inappropriate and meaningless.
“So we have put Iran in a very difficult position, ready to surrender, willing to give us almost anything, and for the first time in decades it is showing extraordinary respect for the United States and the President. Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate decides to hold an inappropriate and meaningless vote on the War Powers Act, sending a message to the number one sponsor of terrorism in the world that the United States does not agree with what I am doing to them and that I must stop. By doing so, they have given support and encouragement to the enemy.”
The White House chief of staff further adds that he will finish the work he started, despite the fact that 3 Republican senators, who had voted in favor of the resolution, had made it more difficult.
Although non-binding, the resolution is important as it increases pressure on the White House to end the war, which is unpopular with the public following the rise in oil prices.
It is another signal of division among Republicans ahead of the midterm elections in November, which will determine whether the party can maintain majorities in both houses of Congress.
