Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the US and British attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen amounted to a disproportionate use of force, accusing the two countries of trying to turn the Red Sea into a "sea of blood".

Turkey, a NATO member, has sharply criticized Israel over the war in Gaza, which Israel says is aimed at destroying Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - and the Turkish leader has repeatedly criticized Western countries for support Israel's campaign.

Asked by reporters about overnight air and naval strikes carried out by US and British forces across Yemen in response to attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea, Erdogan said the strikes did not were proportional.

"What was done was a disproportionate use of force," Erdogan said after Friday prayers in Istanbul.

"At the moment they are trying to turn the Red Sea into a sea of blood and Yemen because of the Houthis, and using all their force, saying they are doing the right response in the region," he added, citing the U.S. and Britain.

Turkey generally backs the internationally recognized Government of Yemen and backs the United Nations-led process aimed at peace between the executive and Houthi rebels who control most of the country.

In the past, Ankara has condemned missile attacks carried out by Houthi rebels in Saudi Arabia.

Houthi rebels have attacked ships transporting goods through the Black Sea, saying the attacks are in support of the Palestinians.
