Ecuadorian authorities say that an Albanian-linked gang leader known as "The Savage" has escaped from prison in Ecuador, as criminal cartels escalate their power struggle on the country's streets.

As "The Telegraph" reports, Fabricio Colón Pico was one of 38 inmates who escaped from Riobamba Central Prison after guards there were taken hostage amid a wave of bloodshed that has swept the South American nation in recent days.

The 44-year-old is the suspected leader of the Lobos, or Wolves, gang. He was arrested four days ago for alleged involvement in a plot to kill Ecuador's attorney general.

Allied with various Albanian mafias, the Lobos are believed to be responsible for moving significant amounts of cocaine from Colombia and neighboring Peru through Ecuador.

His escape on Tuesday came as Ecuador's armed forces were embroiled in a standoff with organized criminals, deploying more than 22,000 soldiers to quell a gang-led terror campaign that has already claimed 16 lives.

With an armed presence on the streets, patrols by land, sea and air, random body and car searches, prison raids and the enforcement of a curfew, President Daniel Noboa's government has vowed not to give up in its "war" on the 22 gangs. designated as terrorist organizations.
