A Chinese journalist, among the first to report independently on the outbreak of COVID in Wuhan, will leave her cell after 4 years.

Zhang Zhan, a former lawyer and one of the few independent Chinese journalists was sentenced to 4 years in prison by the Chinese government, just for reporting on the deadly virus while the Chinese authorities imposed strict censorship.

She was arrested in May 2020 and sentenced months later to four years in prison for “provoking conflicts” – a charge commonly used by the Chinese government to target dissidents and human rights activists.

For more than three months, she documented snippets of life under lockdown in Wuhan and the harsh reality its residents face, from overflowing hospitals to empty shops, as the world braces for the virus to spread.

She posted her observations, photos and videos on Wechat, Twitter and YouTube – the latter two are blocked in China.
