A German army officer was arrested on Wednesday for spying with Russia, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office said.
Officer Thomas H. worked at the procurement office of the Federal Service for Equipment and Information responsible for entrusting German forces and is believed to have repeatedly contacted the Russian Embassy in Berlin and the Russian Consulate General in Bonn since May, offering cooperation on his own initiative.
He is suspected of handing over information to the Russian side that he had access to because of his position in the German armed forces. The ultimate goal was to pass information to russian intelligence services.
The investigations were conducted in close coordination with the Federal Military Counterintelligence Service and the Federal Service for the Protection of the Constitution, while an arrest warrant was issued for the officer on July 27.
On August 9, Thomas H. was brought before the investigator and is now in custody. The charges he faces are up to 10 years in prison.
