Seismic activity appears to have increased across the region, with thousands of seismic tremors recorded on the island of Santorini in Greece for almost a week now.

Just minutes after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in Santorini, recorded moments earlier, an earthquake of the same magnitude 4.8 has been recorded in Sicily, Italy.

The two earthquakes were only 2 minutes apart, and may not be related, yet the Balkan region, Italy and even Turkey are among the areas most at risk from earthquakes.

On the island of Santorini in Greece, scientists report increased activity at the underwater volcano Colombo, although seismologists do not see it as the cause of the earthquakes, which have so far exceeded 6,000.
