US President Donald Trump will try to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept a ceasefire with Russia by Easter, under a peace plan, a source reports.

Trump, who has long claimed he would be able to negotiate an end to the brutal invasion of Ukraine in a single day, is reportedly working to end the war within 100 days.

The unconfirmed plans, reported by Ukrainian media outlet Strana, are circulating in “political and diplomatic circles” in Ukraine and include a ceasefire until April 20 that would halt Russia’s continued advance, a ban on Ukraine joining NATO, and a demand for Kiev to recognize Russian sovereignty over the annexed territories.

In addition, Ukrainian troops would have to withdraw from Russia's Kursk region, where they launched a counteroffensive in August, while a contingent of European soldiers, which could include British troops, would be tasked with overseeing a demilitarized zone. US troops would not be part of this contingent.

The European Union will be asked to help Ukraine in its reconstruction efforts, which could cost up to $486 billion (£392 billion) over the next decade, according to the German Marshall Fund.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied the existence of ceasefire plans, while the White House has yet to officially comment on the reports.

But if the plans are confirmed, Zelensky and Vladimir Putin would hold a phone call within days, before meeting either in late February or early March. An official declaration of the ceasefire would be made on April 20.

A statement on the agreed parameters for ending the war would be published on May 9, after which Kiev would be asked not to extend martial law or mobilize troops.

Trump also wants to create an International Peace Conference, brokered by other major nations, which would meet to reach an agreement to end the brutal war, which Zelensky said has caused over 45,000 casualties among the Ukrainian military and about 840,000 Russian casualties, according to Ukrainian intelligence agencies.

Although many of the terms of this plan include concessions from Ukraine, Trump also reportedly plans to continue US support for the Ukrainian military and provide a path for its EU membership by 2030.

But Russia would also benefit, as plans include gradually lifting sanctions on Russian energy over several years, provided that revenues from special tariffs on energy are used to rebuild Ukraine.

Zelensky's office has strongly denied the legitimacy of these peace plans.

Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian President's Office, wrote on Telegram that the plans do not 'exist in reality', adding that such reports often mask accusations spread by the Russians.

Zelensky told the media on Sunday: “Russia’s war is against Ukraine, against Europe, against the whole world, but above all, the war is being waged on our soil. It is impossible to exclude Ukraine from any negotiating platform. Either this negotiating platform will not have real results, or it will have only political results. And such results will have nothing to do with security or the end of the war.”
