Donald Trump: Ukraine could become Russia's one day! I asked them for $500 billion in rare minerals

US President Donald Trump has said that Ukraine "could become Russian one day", shortly before senior figures in his administration met with Volodymyr Zelensky this week.

Trump also said that Ukraine had agreed to give the US $500 billion in rare earth minerals.

"They may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may become Russian one day, or they may not be Russian one day," he told Fox News.

"I told them I want a rare earth (mineral) worth about $500 billion, and they've basically agreed to do it, so at least we don't feel stupid," he added.

By some estimates, Ukraine may have untapped rare earths and critical minerals worth $12 trillion, although it will likely be several years before the US benefits from such a deal.

"We're going to have all this money in [Ukraine] and I say, I want it," Trump said, suggesting he is seeking compensation from Kiev for aid given to Ukraine by the US.

Following Trump's comments, the Kremlin said a "significant part" of Ukraine is now Russian.

"The fact that a significant part of Ukraine wants to become Russia, and already is, is a fact," said Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, referring to Moscow's annexation of four Ukrainian regions in 2022.

Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia is not recognized by the international community, and Russian forces do not fully control any of the four regions.
