Iran's Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, as the next leader, sources tell Iran International.
The late leader's second son has operated for years in the shadows as an influential figure in power networks.
His election comes as the 88-member clerical body is under the influence of powerful factions within the Iranian regime, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Assembly of Experts on Leadership is a body of 88 clerics, who are (officially) elected by the people every 8 years.
However, in practice, only clerics considered absolutely loyal to the Islamic Republic are qualified to run.
Most of the current members of the Assembly are characterized by hardline positions, corresponding to those of Khamenei. The constitution stipulates that these clerics must elect a new Supreme Leader as soon as possible.
