Glenn Gibbins, a candidate for Nigel Farage's Reform UK party, has been elected as a councillor in the Sunderland area, despite previous racist, misogynistic and homophobic posts published online.

In a 2024 post, Gibbins wrote: "I can't believe how many Nigerians there are in the city... they should burn them all and use them to fill the potholes in the streets."

After his election in the Hylton Castle district, other posts appeared in the media in which he described migrants arriving by dinghy as "an army of Muslims who will one day turn against us."

He had also posted sexist and homophobic comments towards British public figures, including insulting statements towards female television presenters and a comment during a rugby match in 2021, where he wrote that women "should be cooking, sewing and doing housework."

Initially, Reform UK leaders downplayed the controversy. The party's deputy leader, Richard Tice, told the BBC that the party was celebrating its electoral success and that such cases would be dealt with through internal procedures.

However, following strong public backlash, Reform UK later announced Gibbins' suspension from the party pending an internal investigation.

On the other hand, British Education Minister Bridget Phillipson described the case as an example of the "racism and division" that, according to her, is being introduced into British politics by Reform UK.

The Labour Party also reacted harshly, accusing Nigel Farage and the leaders of Reform UK of not immediately condemning their candidate's racist statements.
