"There is little time left to avert it" - UN warns of a global hunger crisis

The UN has warned that tens of millions of people could face starvation and death if the transport of chemical fertilizers is not allowed through the Strait of Hormuz soon.

In an interview, the executive director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Jorge Moreira da Silva, said the world has only a few weeks to avert a major humanitarian crisis.

"We have weeks ahead to prevent what is likely to be a massive humanitarian crisis," he declared.

According to da Silva, the disruption of fertilizer supplies through the Strait of Hormuz could have serious consequences for agricultural production and global food security.

"We could be witnessing a crisis that will force another 45 million people to suffer from hunger and extreme starvation," he warned.
