Spain's Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, described the rail accident that occurred yesterday, Sunday, in Andalusia, which claimed the lives of at least 39 people, as "extremely strange."
According to the latest data published by El Pais, 73 people were injured, many of them in serious condition, when the last carriages of an Iryo company train, which had departed from Malaga in Andalusia (in the south of the country) with destination Madrid, derailed near the Adamuz area.
As a result, another Renfe train, which was traveling in the opposite direction, crashed into them.
Referring to the possible causes of the accident, the Spanish minister emphasized several times that they still remain unknown and that their clarification will be entrusted to the Commission for the Investigation of Railway Accidents.
At the same time, he expressed surprise at the circumstances in which the tragedy occurred, underlining that the Iryo company train was almost new, only four years old.
Puente also announced that the railway line in question was completely renovated in May 2025, as part of an investment of 700 million euros, while the place where the accident occurred is located on a straight segment of the line, without curves.
"This is an extremely strange accident; all technicians and experts are shocked," he declared. According to the minister, the investigation is expected to last at least a month, due to the complexity of the case.
"The commission is independent and will shed light on the causes, so that we understand exactly what happened ," he concluded.
