British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a telephone conversation with the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, today.

"The Prime Minister reiterated his position on Greenland. He said that security in the North is a priority for all NATO allies, in order to protect Euro-Atlantic interests," a spokesman for the British Prime Minister said, according to the BBC.

"He also said that imposing tariffs on allies for pursuing NATO's collective security is wrong."

The spokesman added that Starmer also spoke today with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

The leaders of the eight countries targeted by the US president's new tariff package spent today delivering defiant messages of unity against Donald Trump's threats.

A joint statement from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom warned of a "dangerous spiral" if Trump carries out his ambition to take control of Greenland.

The statement came after an emergency meeting in Brussels, called in response to Trump's threats to impose tariffs on eight countries' exports to the US of 10% from February 1, rising to 25% in June.

Shortly afterwards, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared that "Europe will not be blackmailed" into handing over Greenland, an autonomous territory currently controlled by Denmark.

Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen met with his Norwegian counterpart to discuss the latest escalation. He said he hopes talks with the US will continue "so that the president gives up the dream of taking over Greenland."
