The Kadyrov family's bloody era in Chechnya may be coming to an end. Ramzan Kadyrov, 49, the authoritarian leader of the Chechen republic and one of Vladimir Putin's most brutal allies, is in poor health. He has long suffered from kidney failure and, according to Ukrainian sources, his condition has deteriorated significantly since December.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that his 18-year-old son, Adam Kadyrov, considered the heir to the regime and now appointed Minister of the Interior, is in intensive care after a very serious car accident. According to some reports, he has been urgently transported to Moscow. Nervousness in the Kremlin is at high levels, as the dynastic success of the Chechen totalitarian regime is now in question.

The Kadyrov era began with Akhmad Kadyrov, Ramzan's father and Adam's grandfather. During the Second Chechen War, the former mufti betrayed the separatist cause and sided with Putin, becoming president of Chechnya in 2003. He was assassinated three years later. After a violent power struggle, Ramzan Kadyrov took over and from 2007 installed a brutally repressive regime.

Abductions, disappearances, murders of opponents and journalists, a comprehensive spying apparatus, mass killings, and brutal purges against the LGBTQ+ community became hallmarks of the regime known as the “Butcher of Grozny.” Kadyrov cultivated a violent image, appearing with Rolexes, Kalashnikovs, and extreme luxury, while rebuilding Grozny with Kremlin funds, including a giant mosque.

During the war in Ukraine, Kadyrov returned to the stage with propaganda performances: in 2022, his men failed in an attempt to assassinate Volodymyr Zelensky, while he himself claimed to be at the front, although journalists traced his phone to Grozny. However, Chechen battalions actually fought alongside the Russian army and, since 2023, have partially replaced Wagner mercenaries, especially in the Donbas.

Adam Kadyrov first appeared in public in 2016, when he was just 9 years old and was thrown by his father into a martial arts match without protection, causing reactions even in Moscow. At the age of 15, he was filmed brutally beating a defenseless prisoner, an act of which Ramzan Kadyrov expressed “proud” and decorated him. For many observers, this was the coronation ceremony of the heir. Today, everything seems up in the air again.

If the health of Ramzan Kadyrov and his son does not improve, Chechnya and Moscow could face a dangerous power vacuum, with unpredictable consequences for the region and for the Kremlin's strategy.
