Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has successfully completed works at the Kipoi Compressor Station, located in the Alexandroupoli area near the Greek border with Turkey, as part of the first phase of capacity expansion.
This expansion adds 1.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year of long-term capacity starting January 1, 2026.
The expansion works, which started in January 2024, were completed ahead of schedule, within budget, safely and without any disruption to existing gas flows, reflecting sound planning and operational sustainability. The scope of work included the installation of a new compressor unit and improvements to existing facilities at the Kipoi Compressor Station.
The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), consisting of the Shah Deniz gas field as the source, the expanded South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) through Azerbaijan and Georgia, the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) through Turkey, and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) through Greece, Albania, and the Adriatic Sea to Italy, is currently operating at full capacity, reflecting strong and growing demand for Azerbaijani natural gas in Europe. In this context, capacity expansion has become a practical and strategic necessity, and further increases in supply can only be achieved through timely expansion of the transport infrastructure.
At the same time, any decision to expand TAP must be based on clear and sustained demand from beneficiary countries, supported by long-term contractual commitments. Large-scale infrastructure investments require predictability, and expansion can only proceed where there is confidence that the additional volumes will be absorbed by the market in the long term.
Financing remains a key prerequisite for the expansion of TAP capacity. Azerbaijan supports a balanced and pragmatic approach from international financial institutions and partners, recognizing the continued role of natural gas in ensuring energy security, affordability and stability during the energy transition.
As TAP is a multinational, shareholder-based project, decisions on expansion and financial responsibilities should be shared among all stakeholders, including the pipeline shareholders and the beneficiary markets. Azerbaijan, as one of the shareholders, is ready to contribute constructively within this collective framework.
Azerbaijan reaffirms its commitment to being a reliable and long-term energy partner for Europe and remains open to expanding gas supplies through TAP, provided that the expansion is supported by market demand, joint decision-making and appropriate financing mechanisms.
Since TAP, which supplies European markets with Azerbaijani natural gas, began its commercial operations on December 31, 2020, it has transported over 54 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas to Europe.
TAP is a key component of the Southern Gas Corridor that brings natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field to Europe, with an initial capacity of around 12 bcm per year, but this capacity could be doubled if the above-mentioned conditions are met.
