At least 39 people have died and dozens more have been injured in a tragic train accident in southern Spain, the worst in more than a decade.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening at around 7:45 p.m. local time, in the Adamuz area, near the city of Cordoba, when a high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed into the opposite line, colliding with another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva.

Authorities said there were about 400 passengers and staff on both trains. At least 73 people were taken to hospital, 24 of whom are in serious condition, including four children.

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the accident as "extremely strange," while official investigations have begun, but are expected to take several weeks.

Rescue teams faced great difficulties because of the carriages twisted by the collision. Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended, while centers have been set up at some stations for the families of the victims. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez spoke of a “night of deep pain” for the country, while European leaders have expressed their condolences for the tragedy.
