Four members of Britain's richest family have been jailed after pleading guilty to exploiting their workers and offering unauthorized employment.
Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal, along with their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, however, escaped more serious charges of human trafficking linked to their cottage servants.
The court in Switzerland ruled that the servants, who were mostly uneducated Indians working at their lakeside villa in Geneva, knew what they were getting into.
The four members of the family were sentenced to between four and four and a half years in prison.
Lawyers representing the defendants said they would appeal the court's decision.
In their defence, the Hinduja family's legal team stated that the staff were treated with respect and given accommodation.
The four were accused of seizing workers' passports, paying them in rupees (Indian money) not Swiss francs, barring them from leaving the villa, and forcing them to work long, excruciating hours for ludicrous amounts of money, among others.
According to one report, they spent more money on their dog than the amount they gave to the workers at the villa.
The defendants were not in court in Geneva although a fifth defendant, Najib Ziazi, the family's business manager, was present. He was sentenced to 18 months probation.
The Hindu family, led by Gopi Hinduja, tops the Sunday Times 2024 Rich List with a combined fortune of £37 billion.
