The Bundestag has approved changes to the residence permit in Germany. This benefits foreigners with "patient" status who can obtain a temporary residence permit.

The Bundestag has approved changes to the right of residence in Germany. Foreigners who have lived in Germany for at least five years with the "patient" status can in the future receive a temporary residence permit. Other topics addressed by the Bundestag were the relief package for hospitals and changes to the annual tax law.

The approved residence permit can have a duration of up to 18 months. It will enable interested persons to meet the necessary conditions for legal residence. Among these conditions are the knowledge of German and the guarantee of feeding oneself. Additionally, the legislative package includes easing the deportation of criminals.

During the preliminary debate, the opposition parliamentary group of the unionist parties, the CDU/CSU, repeated its criticism of the new regulations. CSU politician Lindholz said the law provides the wrong incentives to stay in Germany. The tricolor coalition government (called a traffic light in Germany) defended the project. The social democratic politician Lindh emphasized that this put an end to the unworthy situation of "chain permits with the status "endured".
