U.S. President Joe Biden says three members of the U.S. Military have been killed and "many" others wounded in a drone strike on U.S. forces stationed in northeast Jordan near the Syrian border.
"While we are still gathering evidence of this attack, we know it was carried out by Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," Biden said in a statement on January 28.
"We will continue their commitment to fight terrorism. "I have no doubt, we will hold those involved accountable in the time and manner we choose," he said.
Biden said the attack happened in the late hours of January 27. He did not specify the number of people injured in the incident, but a U.S. official said at least 34 staff members had been evacuated after traumatic brain injuries.
A Jordanian television quoted a government spokesman as saying the attack did not take place on Jordanian soil but across the border in Syria.
These details could not be immediately confirmed.
Jordan is a close U.S. ally in the Middle East and the Pentagon has closely stationed about 3,000 troops in the country, often supporting actions in Syria.
In recent years, U.S. troops have been active in Syria fighting islamic state (IS) and other terrorist groups.
If confirmed in Jordan, it would be the first attack us troops have targeted in the country since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas , the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union, in Gaza.
Many observers have voiced fears about the middle east's escalation of the conflict after the gaza war, which was sparked by Hamas attacks in southern Israel on October 7.
As a result of hamas attacks, nearly 1,200 people have been killed in Israel, while in Gaza, more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed in gaza, according to local officials.
Because of Israel's support, U.S. troops have been targeted by Islamist groups in the Middle East, including by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and Iraqi militia groups that are also backed by Tehran.
