The european union's punitive measures, imposed seven months ago due to tensions in northern Kosovo, have already caused a lot of damage to the country's economy and image.
The President of the Kosovo Chamber of Economics, Lulzim Rafuna, told VOA that close to 300 million euros is the value of suspended projects that were supposed to be funded by the European Union.
"All these projects were intended to be implemented as capital projects that would directly benefit economic development but also to build a social welfare for the citizens of Kosovo. The second is the impossibility of Kosovo or the non-allowance of Kosovo to benefit from various European Union funds such as the fund for digitalization where all the countries of the region participated and Kosovo was expelled because of the measures it has in place" said Mr. Rafuna.
Rafuna says that in addition to the economic damages, the punitive measures have conveyed an unsapeful message to foreign investors.
Director of the Group for Legal and Political Studies, Arberesha Loxha Stublla says that further continuation of the measures will affect the perception of other countries about Kosovo.
"It can be considered that the unconstructive and unconvincing side in this process is Kosovo and not many normal countries are given measures by the EU that put us in a group of countries that have committed major violations or had very non-European approaches," said Ms. Loxha Stublla.
The punitive measures followed the sending of northern mayors to their offices with police forces, amid protests by groups of Serb towns that boycotted last Year's April elections.
The European Union has sought to reduce tensions in the north of the country through a plan that envisions suspending police operations in the north, relocating mayors to alternative offices and announcing early elections with unconditional participation of Kosovo Serbs in order to suspend measures.
Since then, the government said it has reduced the number of police officers near municipal buildings, drafted a document that allows through a petition the dismissal of elected Albanian mayors in the north who are opposed by Serbs.
Kosovo's leaders are calling on the European Union to remove punitive measures since European demands are reportedly met, while demanding that the path of European integration not be conditioned on dialogue with Serbia.
"It is a firm position that the measures be lifted as soon as possible, but the most important thing should be that the dialogue process should be separated from Kosovo's integration process into the European Union so that we as a country can focus on advancing the aspiration for integration," said Kosovo's deputy prime minister. Faithful Bislimi.
VOA asked European Union spokesman Peter Stano for a comment on Pristina's requests, but until the preparation of the material received no response. In a statement earlier this month, Mr. Stano said European officials are monitoring the situation very closely.
