Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he was in constant contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin and had exchanged letters with him.

According to Reuters, Berlusconi, 86, has often boasted of his friendship with Putin and sparked a backlash last month when he said Russia had been forced to invade Ukraine because it wanted to put "good people" in charge of the Ukrainian government.

"I have been in contact with Putin, since for my birthday, he sent me 20 bottles of vodka and a very sweet letter," said Berlusconi.

"I sent him a few bottles of Lambrusco (wine) and a letter as well," said Berlusconi, whose birthday was on September 29.

He added that he is extremely concerned about the situation in Ukraine, but cannot give his opinion because it would provoke reactions. The statements came as Berlusconi is negotiating for cabinet posts in the new government led by Giorgia Meloni, who is expected to be appointed prime minister next week.

A spokesman for Berlusconi's party denied he had any further contact with Putin, claiming he was telling his MPs "an old story from many years ago".

Forza Italia issued a statement, saying that Berlusconi and the party's position on the war is "in line with the position of Europe and the United States" and "there is no room for ambiguity and there never has been. "

Relations between Italy's right-wing coalition and Russia are being watched closely.

Even the Russian media have echoed Silvio Berlusconi's statements about the "reconnection" of his relations with Vladimir Putin, about the exchange of gifts and letters of praise with the Russian president and about the war in Ukraine.

According to the Tass news agency, Berlusconi believes that Ukraine's membership in NATO would cause the third world war.
