Russia has released American basketball star Brittney Griner in exchange for the United States' release of notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
The news was confirmed on Twitter by the president of the United States, Joe Biden.
"She's safe. She's on the plane, coming home," Biden said in a tweet.
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone with Ms. Griner from the Oval Office, a US official said.
Griner was arrested at Moscow airport in February for possession of cannabis oil and was sent to a prison last month.
The Biden administration in July proposed a prisoner swap, knowing that Moscow has long sought Bout's release.
Russia's Foreign Ministry confirmed the exchange of prisoners, which it said took place at Abu Dhabi airport.
"The Russian citizen has returned to his homeland," said the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
