The Prime Minister of the British Virgin Islands is arrested.

Andrew Fahie was arrested in Miami, Florida, reports Skynews.

The arrest came after a DEA-led operation, according to a statement from British Virgin Islands Governor John Rankin.

"I understand this is going to be shocking news for people, so I call for calm at this time," Rankin said.

Fahie was arrested at an airport after DEA agents introduced themselves as cocaine traffickers from the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, the Miami Herald reported.

Secretary of State Liz Truss said she was "horrified by these serious allegations."

She added in a statement: "This afternoon, the Prime Minister of the British Virgin Islands, Andrew Fahie, was arrested in the United States on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. This arrest shows the importance of the recently completed Commission of Inquiry. I have spoken to the governor of BVI and he will hold an urgent cabinet meeting of the territory later today. He will set out the next steps tomorrow, including the urgent publication of the investigation report
