The former director of the Police of Montenegro, Veselin Veljovic, was arrested this morning in an action of the Special Police Department by order of the Special State Prosecution.

Veljović was arrested in cooperation with the European Union Agency for Cooperation in Law Enforcement (EUROPOL), writes Vijesti.

The police searched the apartments and houses of Veljović in Podgorica, Mojkovac, Zhabljak and Nikšić since early morning.

Veselin Veljović was the director of the Police Directorate from the summer of 2007 to 2011 and then in the period from July 30, 2018 to December 17, 2020 he was the first man of the Montenegrin police in his second term.

During his career at the head of the security sector, Veselin Veljović has often been accused by opposition parties, some non-governmental organizations and the media of lack of transparency, misuse of police and power, unquestionable political loyalty to Milo Djukanović, but also of involvement in numerous cases of the sale of state property.

After the end of the first mandate, Veljović was an adviser to the then president of Montenegro, Filip Vujanović, in the field of security and defense, while during the time of Milo Djukanović's Government, from 2014, he was also the secretary of the National Security Council.
