An Albanian convicted by the former Serious Crimes Court in Tirana after planning to detonate a bomb at the Roza Haxhiu Stadium in Lushnja is appealing the decision to refuse asylum.

Maksim Çela, one of Aldo Bare's loyalists, claims that he will be "executed in revenge" by rival groups if he returns to Albania.

Maksim Çela, 59, traveled to the United Kingdom on a false passport to join his family after serving 23 years in prison for the murder of police officer Klenti Bano on April 14, 2000, and for other activities linked to the Lushnje criminal gang.

The Albanian claims that "terrible gangs" will come after him to settle a "blood feud" if he is not allowed to stay in the UK.

Lawyers for the British Home Office, Top Channel reports, said in court that he is a "violent terrorist" who should be deported.

At a second-tier immigration court in London, Çela was present and said he had been wrongly convicted of the crimes and that his prosecution had been politically motivated.

Home Office lawyers say he made up the story after learning that his serious act meant he would not be able to claim asylum.

Çela, born in the Albanian city of Lushnja, claims to have once been a businessman and ran a car sales business in Germany as well as working in a dental clinic and a hospital.

The court heard he had planned to detonate a bomb in a 12,000-seat football stadium in 2000.

After the conspiracy was uncovered in 2001, an Albanian court sentenced him to five years in prison.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in September 2006 for “participation in criminal organizations,” the murder of a police officer, and the unauthorized production and possession of weapons and ammunition.

He was released in December 2022, after serving more than 23 years of his 25-year sentence.

In December 2022 he left Albania for Spain, travelled to Italy and then flew to the UK on what he admitted was a fake passport, arriving at Heathrow in January 2023.
