New details on Operation Beeper against Hezbollah.
As the New York Times reports, Israel is behind the detonation of hundreds to thousands of beeper devices in Lebanon that were used by militia terrorists.
According to media reports, Israel intercepted a delivery of equipment to pro-Iranian Hezbollah, and agents reportedly rigged it with explosives.
The Lebanese militia ordered the beeper in Taiwan, the American newspaper wrote, citing several American representatives and informants from other countries.
The Israeli secret service managed to intercept the shipment and place about 25 to 50 grams of explosives in each beeper. According to the Wall Street Journal, Hezbollah took delivery of the beeper in just the last few days.
A source close to the terrorist militia told the AFP news agency that "the blasted beepers are related to a recent shipment of 1,000 devices imported by Hezbollah" that appeared to have been "sabotaged at the source".
According to the New York Times report, Hezbollah had ordered about 3,000 beepers from Gold Apollo.
Israel has not yet commented on the explosions.
According to the Lebanese government, nine people were killed in the beeper blasts, including a girl. Almost another 2,800 people were injured.
According to information from the American news portal Axios, the explosions also paralyzed a significant part of Hezbollah's military command and control system.
Hezbollah used beepers for coded communication. Portable devices were especially popular in the 1980s and 1990s, before mobile phones revolutionized communication.
Just after the start of the war in Gaza, Hezbollah instructed its members to avoid cell phones and instead rely on its telecommunications system to prevent Israeli attacks. Beepers enable, among other things, receiving messages via their radio frequency and therefore without the use of mobile networks.
