A Georgetown man in the US couldn't believe his eyes when he discovered he had been fined $1.4 million for speeding.

Driver Connor Cato was initially shocked by the figure, but he admitted he wasn't surprised to receive a fine considering he was driving at 120 kph (70 kph) in an area where the permitted speed was 70 kph (220 mph).

"I knew I was going to be fined for speeding, but $1.4 million was beyond comprehension," he said.

After asking the court to see if the amount of the fine was a press error, Cato told NBC News he was informed it was not a mistake.

However, there was a relief for Caton, as the court informed him that the $1.4 million was actually a 'staggering' figure, compared to the final amount of the fine he would pay.

Officials from the city of Savannah said anyone running 55 km/h above the speed limit should appear in court where they will receive the final amount of the fine, which ranges from $1,000.

Authorities acknowledged that the high fine is automatically imposed by the electronic system, as a warning sign, but also to force drivers to go to court.
