Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman, along with their spouses, were shot by a man dressed as a Minneapolis police officer. Both are members of the Democratic-Agricultural Labor Party.

According to initial reports, both were shot inside their respective homes.

The MP died along with her husband.

Meanwhile, the senator has been seriously injured, as has his wife.

The alert was issued at 5:30 a.m. Saturday (local time) when the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to multiple gunshots. Police say they are looking for an "armed and dangerous" suspect.

It is about a white man with brown hair who was wearing a black bulletproof police vest over a shirt and a pair of blue pants.

He may have been disguised as a member of law enforcement.

Governor Tim Walz said in a press conference that this was an act of politically motivated violence.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will share more information soon," said Governor Tim Waltz.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department has issued a shelter-in-place order for a three-mile (4.8 km) radius of the Edinburg Golf Course.

Authorities have warned residents in the area not to open their doors to a police officer, but only two officers are present, local news portal Fox 9 reported.

These attacks come at a time when political violence is becoming more frequent in the US.
