People woke up in Tehran in the early hours of Friday to the sounds of explosions and bombs falling.
Tehran is a city that has not seen war for decades, since the end of the Iran-Iraq war in the late 1980s.
There have been back-to-back attacks between Israel and Iran, but these have not targeted major city centers or residential buildings.
So this is a very shocking moment for millions of Iranians. It is hitting very close to people's lives.
Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared with immediate effect “a state of emergency throughout the State of Israel following this preemptive Israeli strike against Iran. A missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the near future. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the directives of the Home Front Command and the authorities, and to remain in protected shelters,” the Defense Minister’s office said in a statement in the early hours of the morning.
The IDF spokesman said in a live conference that the Israeli air force struck more than 40 targets in the Tehran area, including command centers and strategic infrastructure.
"Dozens of fighter jets are operating freely over the Iranian capital thanks to our initial strikes," he said.
According to the spokesman, this is the deepest penetration ever into Iranian territory: "Arrival in Tehran has broad strategic and operational significance. We will reach wherever necessary to protect the citizens of Israel. Tehran is no longer inviolable."
"Overnight, 70 fighter jets attacked dozens of targets in Tehran. We are operating freely thanks to the initial strikes. We have established freedom of action in the air and will reach wherever necessary," the IDF spokesman said at a briefing.
"Air Force pilots flew for two and a half hours to Tehran. This is the longest distance we have ever flown in Iran," he added.
The Israeli military estimates that Iranian bombing will resume in the evening.
According to the IDF, part of the calm of the last few hours is due to a holiday being celebrated in Iran today.
The IDF also reported that the entire Home Front Command has been mobilized: more than 50 rescue battalions have been deployed across the country, and stressed the importance of defense: in the attack on Tel Aviv, three apartments were completely destroyed.
The order not to go to non-essential workplaces and not to hold classes across the country may be extended tomorrow.
The United States says it is aware of the Israeli attacks on Iran, but specifies that it is “not involved in any way.” Washington officials reported this to CNN.
Donald Trump has called a government summit at the White House following Israeli attacks on Iran, according to CNN reports.
Israel has named its offensive against Iran “Am Qalavi,” which in Hebrew means “A people as strong as a lion,” according to a statement from the Israeli Defense Ministry. The name is abbreviated in English as “Rising Lion.”
The NYT meanwhile reports that Israel has struck 6 Iranian bases, including Parchin.
The Israeli military has attacked at least six military bases around Tehran, including the Parchin site, a missile-related complex suspected of being involved in nuclear tests in the past, the New York Times reported.
The biggest concern at the moment is that this will trigger a wider and more destructive war.
