The General Directorate of Prisons has opened the tender for the purchase of new police uniforms for the institutions. The competition for the tender worth 926 million lek, or 8 million euros, opened this Monday.

The amount is divided into two lots, one for uniforms and the other for shoes, which make up a total of 8 million euros.

But what is the cost per effective? The Prison Police has about 3 thousand officers. If 8 million euros are divided by 3,000, then 2,600 euros will be spent on clothing a prison policeman.

This is the figure that will be spent by the Ministry of Justice and the Directorate of Prisons to clothe the police of these institutions, which, apart from clothing, have long raised the problem of lack of staff and low salaries.

Just a few weeks ago, the government reversed itself and removed the 35-year-old age criterion for the recruitment of prison guards, a criterion set only in 2019.

Currently, there are about 400 additional positions that are required in the ranks of this police force, but for which there is no interest due to low salaries, the lack of logistical and material base and, moreover, the difficulty in working.

The procedure in question is very similar to that of the State Police uniforms, for which SPAK launched investigations. The cost of the tender for the blue uniforms was 24 million euros for four years. SPAK launched investigations in 2020 after denouncing not only the cost inflation, but also the reduction by 200,000 of the amount of uniforms that the company had to deliver, without reducing the limit fund.

The damage that is estimated to have been caused to the state budget by this is from 500 to 1 billion lek, if the poor quality of the produced uniforms is also included.
