AN INVITATION TO VISIT AMERICA

In 1936, US President Franklin Roosevelt sent King Zog an invitation to visit America.

Zogu politely refused, as read in this letter he returned to the American president:

"The adoration I have for the great country, the United States of America, and especially for Your Excellency, would make me want to leave for America, but the affairs of state require my presence in my country at the moment. With great pleasure I would hasten to take advantage of the very generous invitation of Your Excellency in the first case that would be presented to me. "

A round trip to America lasted about a month, not counting the length of stay. King Zog probably feared that his long absence in Albania might push Mussolini to overthrow him. Fascist Italy had given evidence that it was ready to stage a coup. Also, the king did not know how he would be received by the Albanians of America.

In 1938, Zog sent three of his sisters to visit America. On March 4, they were hosted at the White House in Washington. "The princesses were having tea with Mrs. Roosevelt and the President entered the room to meet them out of respect," the Washington Times reported.

In Boston, Massachusetts, where Albanians formed the largest colony, the king's sisters were greeted with enthusiasm that surprised reporters. The visit marked the final reconciliation of King Zog with Fan Noli, who more than a decade ago had sentenced each other to death.

While in power, King Zog was unable to visit America, although President Roosevelt's invitation remained in effect.
